Sign-off is Written-off in Middle-Level Reform submitted by Alta Jo Longware on
01/16/2005
NYSUT has stopped efforts to reinstate the teacher’s bargaining unit sign-off clause which was originally required for a school to apply for either Model B or Model C status. They are now focusing their efforts on preparing teachers to participate on the shared decision making committees at their local levels. Since the bargaining unit sign-off clause has been removed, every Technology education teacher should pursue the opportunity to participate in the middle-school reform initiatives at the building and district level.
To do that, every technology teacher needs to get informed with the Reform proposal and the three options that are available to schools. The current Middle-Level Strategy proposal can be located at http://www.regents.nysed.gov/2004Meetings/December2004/1204emscvesidd1.htm.
In addition, every teacher needs to be aware of the implications that the proposal has for their program. NYSTEA has carefully reviewed the proposal and has prepared several documents which address specific language that has possible negative implications for Technology education programs. The following documents are available on this site in .pdf format. 1) The NYSTEA Response document to the Regents dated 12/30/04. 2) The NYSTEA Chart of Recommendations dated 12/28/04. 3) The NYSTEA letter of concerns to the Regents dated 1/6/05.
The NYSTEA If you have any questions about the Reform Strategy or how it may affect your students and programs, or about any the NYSTEA documents, please contact me at AJLatNYSTEA@westelcom.com.
