 News from the President
NYS Key Leader Energy Institute submitted by Thomas Frawley on 04/21/2006
Dear New York Teacher:

You are invited to apply for the NYS Key Leader Energy Institute being held
July 17-20, 2006 at the Best Western Sovereign Hotel in Albany
(applications are available at www.need.org/states/newyork). This Institute
will build a team of talented Key Leaders, dedicated to energy education,
which will be an integral part of assisting the New York Energy Research
and Development Authority (NYSERDA) in expanding our offerings to more
teachers in the coming years. The Institute will offer specific training on
conducting Energy Smart Students workshops in your region, along with
interesting interactions with energy professionals and scientists.

If selected to attend, NYSERDA will cover the costs for your room and
board, and attendance at the institute. In return, you will be asked to
commit to teach energy workshops for a minimum of 24 hours in a one-year
period. This may be a combination of after-school workshops, all-day
workshops during the school year (including Saturdays, if you wish) and
during the summer. The workshop schedule will be dependent on your schedule
and availability to teach.

NYSERDA will offer a stipend of $300 to teach a full-day workshop and $150
for a 3-hour workshop, and reimburse for travel expenses. In addition,
expenses for materials/supplies to deliver the workshops will be covered by
the program. If this opportunity interests you, please complete the
attached application and return to NYSERDA by May 1.

Selected Key Leaders will be notified by May 15. Teachers will be accepted
into the program based on the following criteria:

• Past training in energy education
• Integration of energy activities into your classroom
• Your plans to deliver energy workshops in your school district or region;
• Past service to Energy Smart Students Program or other energy programs --
such as Green Schools, Technology Students Association, etc.
NYSERDA will also consider geographic location, grade level, subject area,
and years of relevant experience to assure adequate distribution of Key
Leaders throughout the state. Attached is a preliminary list of training
topics you can expect at the NYS Key Leader Energy Institute. I hope you
will consider applying.

Applications are available at www.need.org/states/newyork

Sincerely,
Rick Gerardi, Director
Residential Programs
