NEW SCIENCE AND MATH RESOURCES AT FREE submitted by Thomas Frawley on 06/01/2006
More than 30 Federal agencies formed a working group in 1997 to make hundreds of Federally supported teaching and learning resources easier to find. The result of that work is the FREE website (www.ed.gov/free). The following are recent additions in the areas of science, mathematics, and technology.

* Genetic Science Learning Center (http://gslc.genetics.utah.edu/): features animations and activities for learning about DNA, cells, and other topics in genetics and bioscience. Build a DNA molecule. Transcribe and translate a gene. See why a firefly's tail glows. Use DNA evidence to solve a mystery. (University of Utah, supported by National Institutes of Health)

* Digital Workshops (www.paec.org/teacher2teacher) offers online professional development for teachers in math and science, language arts, and other areas. Watch presentations on vocabulary, phonemic awareness, reading and writing in the content areas, algebra, measurement and geometry, computation, linear equations, differentiated instruction, history, inclusive classrooms, and using data to improve instruction. (U.S. Department of Education)

* Mathematics: Research Overview (www.nsf.gov/news/overviews/mathematics): looks at topics of major research in mathematics: image creation, statistics, inverse problems, CPU testing, materials and nanotechnology, proteins, random graphs, prime numbers, optimization, design, financial mathematics, weather and climate simulation, rare events, and high-dimensional data sets. (National Science Foundation)

* What in the World Is That? -- The Learning Page (http://memory.loc.gov/ammem/ndlpedu/features/science): examines 16 inventions: the submarine, battery radio, cotton gin, reaper, electron microscope, telephone, gramophone, telecommunication cable, snow gauge, ornithopter, airphibian, and others. (Library of Congress)
